Centaurs are a race of name-givers resembling burly humans atop mighty horses. They have thrived for centuries in the wild lands surrounding old Tor Kaldeon, and a number are members of the Great Caravan. They were originally created by the archmage Calnion Blackthorn to be his butlers, jesters, and house servants of various sorts. When he was killed by the efreeti Edazar Al Shah, his servants were freed. They left Tor Kaldeon for the surrounding forest, before his magics faded and the Tor became a deathtrap. Physical Description: Centaurs posess the lower bodies of great horses with the upper bodies of muscular humans. Long hair runs down their backs like a mane. Males have broad chests, rippling muscles, and handsome, angular faces. Females are curvaceous and graceful, with features considered beautiful by elves and humans. Centaurs speak in deep, sonorous voices. Centaur skin tone ranges from caucasian to rich brown. Their eye color is typically brown or blue, but uncommon individuals have black, green, red, or violet eyes. Centaurs do not understand the physical "modesty" of other races, and wear clothing only if the weather demands it. They enjoy decorating their bodies, however, and enhance their looks with jewelry, flowers, and other baubles. There are four subraces of centaurs, each from a separate "batch", distinguished mainly by the colors of their fur/hair and tail. These subraces do not hybridize - the child of a bantoor and a quagga will be either fully bantoor or fully quagga, for example. The individual characteristics to tend to carry over - so the pathal child of a blond bantoor will probably have a light base coat, for example - but in the case of Yawning Phoenix, a famous jatar fighter, his complex flourishes are due to genes inherited from his bantoor mother. * Bantoor centaurs have hair and fur ranging over the triangle from blond to black to flame, with a medium brown being most common. Their tails are the same color. * Quagga centaurs have stark black and white stripes, forming rings around their lower torsos and limbs, and flowing back through their hair. Their tails range from black to medium grey. * Pathal centaurs have a base coat ranging over the triangle from white to tan to medium grey, with spots ranging in color from black to medium brown, and in size from a handful of large patches to a dappled gradient. Their tails are the same as their base coat. Some pathal centaurs braid their hair, creating a striking effect by mixing strands between their patches, but some find the effect dizzying or garish. * Jatar centaurs have a black base coat, with triangles, stars, and occasionally socks of white. These "flourishes" are almost always symmetrical across the body. When they occur in their hair, the result is a streak of white. Their tails are black. Centaur Lands: Centaurs have few permanent settlements; they generally live in nomadic tribes, either moving when food becomes scarce or when outsiders invade their territory, or making decade-long curcuits through landlocked metahuman lands, trading as they go. The only large, permanent settlement is Kadania, a sprawling patchwork of buildings, huts, tents, and wild groves surrounding old Tor Kaldeon. The Tor was originally in an Outlands forest, but Kadania has expanded until it borders grasslands in the south. Magic: The magical and healing needs of centaur tribes are usually met by druids, with quite a few sorcerers mixed in due to arcane energies left over from Calnion's work. Wizards are a small minority, but well-respected, and those from Kadania have access to a great library of Calnion Blackthorn's books. Having been created by a human archmage, they're one step removed from the gods, and perhaps because of this distance they rarely devote, much less become clerics or paladins. Personality: Centaurs live for pleasure, hoping each day to indulge their desires, whether they involve listening to new tales or attempting new amorous pursuits. Centaurs are easy-going and practical, yet passionate, and few tribes require much in the way of laws. Centaurs are often vain regarding their personal appearance; most are disgusted by any sort of scar or disfigurement, whether a battle scar or a tattoo. Centaurs generally consider romance and marriage to be entirely up to the couple in question. Children, on the other hand, are the future of the tribe, and are generally looked after in common by the parents and trained fledgers of the tribe; this also preserves certain bloodlines, with valuable traits that nevertheless make them poor parents. Centaurs are usually of Chaotic and/or Good alignment. Adventurers: The passionate nature within centaurs may easily drive them to adventure. Ambition, wanderlust, love, or vengeance may compel a centaur into a wandering life. Even in lands where centaurs are uncommon, a centaur hero can find adventure. Long journeys are easy for centaurs. A young centaur with a desire to see the world will often roam far from their tribe. Names: Centaur names are common phrases and words, in any language the parents speak; unlike most races, no gravitas is required, and a name like More Of A Guideline is not particularly unusual. Many centaurs translate their names into the local language, and a few switch permanently to the Pariccian version. Centaurs who adopt other cultures often translate their names into something beautiful, like Sperethiel, or obscure, like Ignan, if their name is already in the local language and surprising. Adrakastomar("Series Of Unlikely Explanations", Pariccian), Beor Kartha("Ancient Stone", Draconian), Ialuta Gan("Flitting Arrow", Draconian), Moonlight, More Of A Guideline, Sethra Ouren("Amenable To Change", Sylvan), Tactical Grace, Thanascor("Mistbow", Sylvan) A first-level centaur is very young, and would have to run away to adventure on their own. The growth spurt over fifth and sixth level is considered to mark an adult centaur. A fifth-level or lower centaur may have difficulties getting into bars in high-tech or some magic-tech settings(in low-tech settings, alcohol is generally considered a preservative, and is not restricted). This depends on individual traits - a strapping youth with STR: 21 and Large size category may not have problems getting into a human bar, even if he does have some growing left to do. * Monstrous Humanoid: Centaurs are of the Monstrous Humanoid type in game terms. * Centaur land speed is 50'. * Lowlight: Centaurs can see twice as far as humans in similar illumination. * Alignment: Usually C* and/or *G. * Automatic Languages: two of Human, Draconian, Sylvan, or Pariccian. * Favored Class: Ranger. A centaur can attack with a weapon at their normal attack bonus and make two hoof attacks as secondary attacks(-5 to hit, half STR bonus to damage) at the same target. At fifth level, their hoof attacks increase to 1D6. Medium: A first-level centaur is about human-sized. As quadrupeds, they can carry 150% as much weight as a human of similar STR can. They must wear armor designed for their race, at twice the cost. Large: A fourth-level centaur has reached the Large size category, though they still have growing to do. As Large creatures and quadrupeds, they can carry three times as much weight as a human of similar STR can. They have a -1 size penalty on attack rolls, a -1 size penalty to AC, a -4 size penalty on Hide checks, and a +4 size bonus on grapple checks. Centaur Lands: Centaur herds are found throughout Ansalon, roaming the pastures and pleasant woodlands far from the lands of other races. Centaurs have no permanent settlements, and migrate when food becomes scarce or when outsiders invade their territory. The most common breed of centaurs are called Abanasinians. These centaurs once dwelled on the plains of Abanasinia, but migrated south into Qualinesti and then throughout the forests of Ansalon. Religion: Centaur religion is animistic - they see the sacred spirit of the worlds in all things. Thus, druids rather than clerics serve centaur communities. Of those centaurs who choose the priesthood, most are clerics of Habbakuk, Chislev, and Mishakal. Names: Centaurs are named by the elders of their herd, according to the seasons and the skies at the time of their birth. In addition, adult centaurs take the name of one of their parents as a surname(men use the name of their father or grandfather, and women use the name of their mother or grandmother). A few centaurs use the name of a mate rather than a parent; such a centaur might call himself Typhion, husband of Lorietta. Adventurers: The passionate nature within centaurs may easily drive them to adventure. Ambition, wanderlust, love, or vengeance may compel a centaur into a wandering life.
