Tamin

Description

Tamin(specifically moetra tamin) are humanoid reptilians, averaging 3'4" tall and 35pd. A tamin has a muscular tail like an alligator, and their arms and legs have membranous fins supported by spines. Underwater, they combine their leg fins with their tail to make a pseudo-fluke. Their scales are peppered with small hornlike protrusions. Hollow crests run from their temples, high over their head, and down their back to their tail. Their face tapers forward to a rounded muzzle, with nasal slits along the top that pull tight underwater(a tamin can breathe water, but only through their mouth). Their eyes are teardrop-shaped, slitted, and proportionally quite large.

Tamin coloration is usually a riot of colors and patterns(zigzaggy, nose-to-tail rings, etc), though in some individuals this results in a camouflage effect, and some are almost solid with one color. They have no hair. Their eyes range from red to pink to bright, bright white. The fine and soft scales on their palms, and running from their belly down under their tail, are distinctly pale, taking over from the coloring underneath.

Tamin genitalia are up on the abdomen, and vaguely dolphin-like; what's visible is normally a nondescript slit protecting the sensitive parts inside, including three "claspers" for males and females alike. The excretory organs, meanwhile, are further down, about 8" out on the tail. The pelvis is much simpler than in humans, which is related to the existence of almanji and laichara.

Habits

Most tamin are loyal, devoted, and social, forming groups and getting along within others easily. They prefer to live in groups of several families, often sharing a single communal sleeping room. Their diet is onmivorous, with a distinct preference for fruits and insects.

Young

Birth is always single. However, impregnation is routinely multiple(usually one to three), with one egg starting to develop as soon as their big sibling is laid. This cluster of serial gestation is called a "season", and is common only because of good modern nutrition. Despite this term, the breeding season is unrestricted. Egg weight is 4.8% of mother's weight. Gestation is 22 days, incubation is 44 days. Tamin reach physical adulthood around 18 years of age, and death by old age comes around 75 years.

Almanji & Laichara

Description

Almanji are tamin above the waist, but have a legless serpentine body below the waist. Laichara are again tamin above the waist, if a bit small, but have a centauroid arrangement of four legs below the waist. Both stand about 3' tall, but in both cases this is due to more of their body being low to the ground they average the same 35pd.

Those who're being politically correct specify normal tamin and these as "moetra tamin", "almanji tamin", and "laichara tamin", but more commonly they're specified as "tamin", "almanji", and "laichara".

Young

Almanji and laichara are perfectly able to interbreed with tamin, each differing only by one control gene(and from each other by two).

Explanation

Vertebrate life on Lethe doesn't use the same hox limits Earth vertebrates do; instead, their hox layout has "repeatable units" akin to that of Earth insects. In particular, the tamin population retains some variation in the repetition of the pelvic unit, with (moetra) tamin having one repetition(a phenotype backed by three genotypes), almanji having none, and laichara having two.

A plurality of tamin are homozygous "early pelvic", but some are homozygous "late pelvic". Breeding between these two groups produces a smaller genetic minority, heterozygous with both. These three genotypes share the same moetra phenotype, but heterozygous individuals can pass on almanji and laichara chromosomes, which can produce almanji and laichara phenotypes almanji is recessive, laichara is dominant. Because both phenotypes are stigmatized, laichara is the rarest, with almanji showing up in a scattered fashion.

Parekirn

Description

A cousin of tamin; their common ancestor was the first taminid to spread to all of Lethe. On the archipelago of Waklan, those who would evolve into parekirn grew larger and became apex predators, with a number of races, although they differ only in color. While the tamin branch evolved to take refuge in groups, the parekirn branch evolved to be territorial and solitary. Parekirn also aren't as smart, despite being larger, with a sleek head instead of the bulbous tamin head.

Parekirn are reptilians bearing a vague resemblance to slender humanoid crocodiles, averaging 6' tall and 110pd, with three-foot tails and nine-inch muzzles. Their thick scales are punctuated by osteoderms, although their scales still grow fine and soft on their bellies and the palms of their hands. Their coloration is sandy camouflage, although each race's matches one of the Waklan islands. Their eyes are smaller than tamin eyes, and obscured by protective brow ridges; similar-looking structures just below are thermal pits. Females have a number of mobile spike rows around the head, while in males these support membranous frills. A subtler sexual difference is that males have no claspers.

Predatory adaptations include web-producing spinnerets further down the tail than the excretory organs, fangs with sedative venom, thermal pits, and antennae in the head spikes for etheric animal magnetism. This last leads to them being treated not just as wild animals, but also untrustworthy.

Politics

Society lenses generally include a language or two, without counting one as a native language. This is to make it easier to stack multiple society lenses, which grows increasingly common as people identify more with their homeworld than with their state; but most characters will have a language from a society lens as their native language. Mark this as "Thuban is Native(-6)" or the like.

Hollsopple Republic

The imperial power of Streiga, Hollsopple is a federation of trade houses. The formation of an overarching government quieted the deadly politics that dominated before, and reined in the worst excesses of the trade houses, creating a climate where the free market can push the economy ever higher. Ironically the main driver toward federation has been competition between the trade houses themselves, each considering the limits on the others worth the limits on themself.

Traditionally, holl couples choose a family name to use, and their children use the name until they start their own families. The same names readily serve for a family or for a child of either gender.

Reikoll Concord

The imperial power of Jinnog, actually a loose alliance of three semi-independent polities. The capital is held as a tridominion, and the laws are complicated by which citizenship an individual holds. Despite confusing outsiders, this system works for the reikolli, allowing them considerable group specialization over the various resources of Jinnog.

Lilith

A planet of striking colors, beneath the thick violet cloak of its atmosphere lies a flat world, dominated by wetlands with silvery water. Little of the surface can really be called lake or land.

The biosphere is thick, with the purple of the air being due to bacteria and the silver of the water due to plankton. The purple aerobacteria photosynthesize, and serve as the base of the upper food web.

The atmosphere is quite dense(about 5 atm), and oversaturated with water. The negligible axial tilt and heavy atmospheric churn combine to reduce local variation in climate; the weather all over is near-constant cloud cover and rain, miserably hot for lethian life.

Cadmine

An asteroidal moonlet, covered in formations of red-orange crystal. Mining has begun, `.

Lethe

A garden world, with free oxygen in the air and home to various carbon/water life. This is the homeworld of the tamin.

Demeter

An asteroidal moonlet, `S-type asteroid`

Velnos

A major moon, with vast salt deposits. Velnos appears to be a captured protoplanet. Its surface shows evidence of having passed very close to Sehul(or possibly another star) many times, likely at the periap of an eccentric orbit, as the salt has melted and flowed into the lowlands. The pale salt contrasts with dark rock, producing a striking patchiness visible from Lethe's surface, in contrast with Demeter's gentle shades.

Sakra

A rich green ice giant, the upper reaches of its atmosphere colored by copper oxides.

Ariel

The innermost moon, nigh-molten with tidal heating, with a tenuous atmosphere of metal vapor. Deadly enough that its substantial metal deposits aren't yet exploited. However, the surface has been visited, and exploitation of that metal is but a matter of time.

Despite its small size, it has active volcanism, and even tectonic plates of a sort. Large slabs of basalt make up the surface, with cracks between them continually reopening and seeping metal-rich lava.

Sikarra

A barren major moon with a tenuous atmosphere. This is the homeworld of the tockwan, the last remnants of the oldest civilization in the Sehul system.

Lobrek

An M0V red dwarf, distant companion to Sehul.

Frozen Titania? Macbeth?

Mythology

In streigan mythology, Sehul is a great dragoness who presides over fire and sky. Velnos is her consort, a culture-hero god and cowherd. Once a month they stay together for a time, obscuring their light together, leaving Lethe illuminated only by the light of Demeter.

In yirandoon mythology,

Due to ease of modification, LC doesn't change.
